Our schools are at a crossroads.
Our world is changing and schools today need to prepare the Digital Natives sitting in our classrooms for living and learning in the 21st Century. We need to SHIFT our conception of teaching and learning and create environments that are student-centered, hands-on, project-based and web-centric. As Daniel Pink writes in A Whole New Mind, schools today need to "prepare students for their future not our past." It is a very engaging and challenging time to be a school leader and classroom teacher.

Web 2.0 in Today's Classroom
Why web 2.0?
Just as pen, paper, scissors, glue, crayons, construction paper, typewriter and watercolors were some of the tools many of us used to produce reports and share what we were learning, blogs, wikis, photo sharing sites, podcasts and other new online resources are the tools of today's students. And just as we had to learn to cut, to color, to use cursive writing, our students must learn how to use these new tools. That means we must use the tools, evaluate their usefulness, and teach students to use them effectively as well. If school technology integration and library media programs are to continue to be relevant to today's students, we must embrace these new digital tools--hopefully, leading the way as we have in other areas of technology in the past.

Power of Publishing
One of the tenets of 21st Century learning is the understanding, practice and power of 'publishing' student work to the web. Students become more engaged in their education when they understand that their efforts will be posted or published to a web, wiki or blog page. Research also shows that when students are engaged their understanding is deeper and greater. Additionally, students who participate in online collaborative projects grow from peer evaluation, critique and analysis.
